Prof. CHEN Xianhui, CHEN Xiaofei and DU Jiangfeng from USTC were elected as new members of CAS, according to the official announcement of CAS membership election on Dec 7th.

Prof. CHEN Xianhui was born in 1963 in Xiangtan, Hunan Province. He got his PhD in USTC in 1992and continued working in USTC as an associate professor. During 1994-1995 he worked as Humboldt Fellow in Karlsruhe Research Center, Karlsruhe and Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Physics, Stuttgart, Germany. And later as a visiting Professor he had rich research experience in Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Ishikawa/Japan and in Texas Center for Superconductivity, University of Houston, U.S.A. He was employed as a professor in Department of Physics, USTC in 1998 and was funded National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China. In2002 he was rewarded Changjiang Scholars Achievement Award from Ministry of Education. He is now a professor and doctoral supervisor in Department of Physics, USTC and head of Key Laboratory of Strongly-Coupled Quantum Matter Physics.

Prof. CHEN’s main research interests have been searching for new functional materials and study on the correlation between the structure and physical properties, and physics in High-Tc superconductivity and strongly correlated electron system. He was recognized for his discovery of (Li,Fe)OHFe(Se,S), Ybx(Me)yHfNCl (Me= NH3 and THF), and doped phenanthrene, broadening the material base for superconducting studies. He was honored YE Qisun Physics Prize from Chinese Physical Society in 2009 and the First Prize of Science & Technology in Scientific Research for Colleges and Universities of China in 2010, and the international Bernd T. Matthias Prize in 2015.

Meanwhile he acts as the editor for Scientific Reports, Solid State Communications, Physics, and Process in Physics etc. He is also the director of Chinese Physical Society.

CHEN Xiaofei was born in1958 in Benxi, Liaoning Province. He graduated from USTC and got his bachelor degree in 1982, and later got his master degree from Institute of Geophysics CAS in 1985. In 1991 he achieved PhD for Earth Sciences in University of South California. He returned to China in 1996 and became a professor in Peking University, and was financed by National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China. CHEN acted as director for Department of Solid Geophysics and was honored Changjiang Professor in 2000. In 2008 he returned to USTC and became the executive director of School of Earth and Space Sciences.

Prof. CHEN focuses on the study of theory and simulation of Earth sciences. He has achieved a number of breakthroughs in earthquake rupturing and successfully applied them to earthquake prevention. CHEN published more than 120 scientific papers in a number of journals. In 2009 he was awarded the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation and in 2015 was elected as fellow of International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and received Silver Medal at the same time.

He is the editor of Geophysical Journal International (2008- ) and associate editor in-Chief for Earthquake Science (2009- ). Meanwhile he acts as vice director of Seismological Society of China.

Du Jiangfeng, who is now a physicist, was born in 1969 in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. He was enrolled to School of the Gifted Young USTC in 1985 and got his bachelor degree, master and PhD here. He is a professor now and the executive director of School of Physical Sciences. He is also a Changjiang Professor, a winner of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, and head for Big Science Initiate Program.

Prof. Du mainly focuses on spin based quantum computation and simulation, quantum metrology, and related quantum physics. He has contributed a lot to this field and now acts as principle investigator in solid-state quantum computation research based on quantum control of spins program and development of single-spin based multi-frequency magnetic resonance spectrometer program.

DU’s research achievements have received the second prize of 2012 National Natural Science Award, and Outstanding Achievements in Natural Science by the Ministry of Education of China (2011). So far he has published more than 130 scientific papers in Nature, Science, Physical Review Letters and other renowned international journals.

Besides, former USTCers XIE Xincheng (774), JING Yipeng (84, master) was elected as CAS members and ZHUANG Xiaowei (87) as CAS foreign member. WU Weiren (756) and REN Huiqi (88 master) became members of Chinese Academy of Engineering.

A total of 67 USTCers, so far, became members of CAS and CAE.
